PMO workshop: business practices to align Projects to Strategy and improve project success rates with John Kocon, PMO (in-person only)

The top predictor of project success is aligning projects with strategic priorities (Harvard School of Public Health/Towers Watson). Unfortunately, many organizations have inadequate business practices to establish and maintain a project portfolio that is highly aligned with strategic goals and priorities.   As a result, scarce resources are misallocated, project portfolio performance declines, and a less than optimal set of projects are delivered.

Through guided discussion and group exercise, this interactive workshop captures best practices and new ideas to develop effective business practices that create and sustain a strategically focused project portfolio.

PPM for Service Delivery in CROs - Creating an Integrated Data Foundation to Maximize Efficiency & Profitability (in-person only)

PPM is the lifeline of a service delivery organization, but is often overlooked - resulting in significant margin erosion, staffing challenges, missed milestones and costly write offs.

These common issues crop up for CROs when they do not effectively integrate sales, delivery, resourcing and financial forecasting across the portfolio or have devolved into sub-optimal ways of working. This session will highlight the PPM organizational best practices to (1) maximize efficiency of Commercial, Operations, and Finance processes (2) create an aligned data model & Governance model pre- and post-award (3) enable portfolio reporting & executive decision support, and (4) facilitate more effective information sharing with clients - all of which will help you avoid these pitfalls.

This session will also highlight Planisware best practices around key design principles for a service delivery organization, including:
-Scoping level of granularity (e.g., global vs. region vs. country level)
-Change in Scope Management
-Name-based resource management & assignments
-Tata model considerations for WBS & RBS across project lifecycle

Resource management and Capacity Planning require as accurate information as possible from the portfolio, operations, and finance teams in order to be the most effective. As outsourcing models, resource needs, scope of the pipeline, and complexity of protocols continue to change, especially in the era of COVID-19, resource management, budget, and operations teams must work together to strike the balance between cost savings and high quality, while managing the changing landscape of the workforce.

This presentation will highlight the journey a rapidly growing biopharma company has been on to accurately forecast resource needs to operationalize a robust portfolio of clinical trials.  It will include challenges that were faced and continue to persist with introducing the concept of Capacity Planning, developing role-based algorithms, understanding different needs based on trial complexity and sourcing models, introducing new tools and dashboards, and using the data to drive decision making.

Orchestra 100% online training: discover the easiest way to manage user adoption, long engagement and increase your ROI!

Its critical for PMOs to mitigate “systemic” project portfolio risk to achieve Project Portfolio goals and ensure PMO success and longevity.  Project risk often occurs within the project life cycle boundaries and impacts a specific project. However, systemic Project Portfolio risk originates outside the project life cycle in business processes that are upstream or parallel to the project life cycle and impacts a group of projects.  Systemic Project Portfolio risk can not only adversely impact the performance of a project, but also an entire Project Portfolio.

This session describes the characteristics of systemic Project Portfolio risk; outlines PMO strategies, processes, and tools to mitigate systemic Project Portfolio risk; and provides case studies of PMO actions that successfully managed systemic Project Portfolio risk.

This session will be recorded and available after the event for registrants.
